The Descent: Inanna Class 1 of 5 in Healing and Transformation Through the Venus Retrograde Journey, a series on the oldest descent story we have and the planetary cycle that moves in the same shape.
Story • Initiation • Surrender
About every nineteen months, Venus slips out of the evening sky, stays hidden for a while, and comes back before dawn on the other side of the Sun. A Sumerian poem composed more than four thousand years ago follows the same shape, and this class begins there.
Inanna decides to go down into the underworld. At each of seven gates something is taken from her, until she arrives with nothing at all. Then she comes back, and her return carries a price that someone else pays. The pattern is precise, and once you've seen it you start recognizing it in lives you know: the stripping away, the stretch in the dark, and a return that leaves a person changed.
The goddess at its centre is the one Enheduanna praised in her hymns. Enheduanna was a high priestess at Ur and the earliest author in history we know by name.
It's an old story, and still a good one. It lands in a room of adults who have watched someone they love go down and come back different.
CLASS 2 · The Crossing: The Cycle in the Sky
The Crossing: The Cycle in the Sky Class 2 of 5 in Healing and Transformation Through the Venus Retrograde Journey, a series on the oldest descent story we have and the planetary cycle that moves in the same shape.

Sky • Cycle • Observation
Most people have noticed the brilliant light low in the west after sunset. Plenty have also seen a brilliant light in the east before dawn and filed it as something else. Both are Venus, and one planet in two skies is Inanna's story compressed into a single observation.
This class is about that one planet and the cycle she runs between the two skies: her disappearances, her meetings with the Sun, and what the people who watched her for thousands of years made of them.

Pattern • Culture • Resonance
Inanna's is the oldest written version of this story, and it has a great deal of company.
Cultures separated by mountains and millennia have told their own descents and returns. Some figures choose to go down; others are taken. Some come back whole, some come back altered, and some are gathered together again by other hands. Set side by side, these stories sort around one question that does a surprising amount of work: who makes the crossing, and who does the dying? The answer tells you what a culture believed the descent was for.
Astrologers have disagreed about this passage as well. Two major traditions looked at the same condition, a planet turning back, and valued it in opposite ways. Holding both views at once, without forcing a winner, is a useful skill in its own right.
CLASS 4 · The Archetype in Popular Culture

Archetype • Recognition • Culture
Once you know how this story goes, you start finding it in places nobody filed under myth.
This class looks at the descent pattern in contemporary storytelling, and at the harder half of the skill: telling a genuine instance from a surface resemblance. Archetypal reading earns its keep when it can say "yes, this one" with reasons, and "this one only resembles it" with the same confidence.
One example is Barbie. If you spent time in astrology circles in 2023, you've likely heard this one. Meg Elison published the Inanna comparison within two days of the film's opening, and Chris Brennan and Demetra George took it further on The Astrology Podcast. That familiarity makes it a good case to work through carefully.

Timing • Phases • Integration
The last class brings the whole cycle down to human scale.
Venus's passage has distinct phases, and each one reads as a place in a story. Each one describes a condition people recognise from their own lives, and what it's like to be inside each of them is the substance of the class.
The stretch that draws all the attention turns out to be the smaller part of the passage. Most of the story usually happens in the quiet run-in beforehand and the slow recovery afterward, and seeing that changes how the whole cycle reads. So does noticing that the pattern keeps bringing a person back to nearly the same ground, again and again across a lifetime.
This is the class where the myth, the sky, and a life become one subject.
